Three Months In: What I’ve Learned Since Leaving Corporate Life

It’s been three months since I left corporate life.

Here are 15 things I’ve learned - in literally no particular order!

1. There’s a lot to learn.

Running a business is a school day, every day.

2. It’s scary - but you’re in control.

And that control is empowering and gives you confidence..

3. You don’t have to work with horrible people.

It’s a choice now. And what a joy that is.

4. Salaries are great - they bring stability.

But they’re not the only way to earn money.

5. I’m way more motivated to fill my days when I’m working for myself.

Every hour feels like it counts.

6. I never get Sunday night dread.

That alone is worth something. lack of sleep is a silent killer…

7. I can spend an entire day learning - and that just makes me better at my job.

Freedom and growth go hand in hand.

8. ChatGPT is amazing.

It’s basically my business partner now. And I’ve named him Ferris after my favourite movie of all time..

9. Getting clients is hard work.

And even when you do, things can change. Quickly.

10. I’m both a valued partner… and expendable.

A strange contradiction, but I get it..

11. New business development opportunities have no limits - only my own energy, enthusiasm, and creativity.

And coffee.

12. People are nice.

Truly. Especially…

13. The independent consultant / coach / contractor community.

Some of the nicest humans I’ve met.

14. My family are amazing.

They’ve backed me all the way. I couldn’t do this without them.

15. I won’t cycle as much as I tell myself I will…

But I’ll keep telling myself I will. And sometimes when I do, there’s a pint in the sun at the end. My boss is very relaxed about this stuff 😉

I could probably go on - especially if I overthought or honed this list.

But I told myself just to write and see what emerged.

So… this is what emerged.

What do I miss from my old life?

The wonderful friends and colleagues I don’t get to see every day anymore.

That’s it.

Not a long list, is it?

If you’re at a crossroads…

I know how you feel. It took me two years, one misjudged job move, and an amazing coach to finally take the leap.

This isn’t a back-up plan anymore.

This is the plan. And I’m loving it.

That doesn’t mean I don’t worry - about income, about building the business, about whether it will all work out.

But those worries are mine. And that challenge is mine.

And I think I’m up to it.

If you’re exploring your own next move and want to talk it through, Get in Touch. Let’s have a chat and explore how coaching could help clarify your path.
